Welcome to my LIU e-portfolio.  This space serves several purposes but is primarily  a way to organize and showcase my profession life.  I hope the readers find the information useful and I intend to add a few personal bits of information and entertainment so you can know me better.  My professional life is intertwined with my personal life mostly by the people.  The human interactions that occur in my work day are often what gives me joy and gratitude in my personal life.  There is, of course and occasional work frustration that may leak into my home but that is also where I find my path to resolution.

Comments on online teaching:

I am having a difficult time breaking away from my brick and mortar classroom!  And perhaps my age shows when I scornfully compare a plant on a classroom windowsill or a vinyl recording of a tree frog with digital multimedia.  Well, they are examples of multimedia!

But....back to reality and the online classroom where I now sit.

Multimedia is crucial in an online classroom and the striking need to "mix it up" continually illustrates great creativity and thought on the part of the online teacher.   Web 2.0 tools such as Youtube and Google Earth, are rich and engaging resources and other Google apps and Diigo are fabulous tools for students to help with staying organized in a sea filled with murky information.  Games, puzzle makers, gradebooks, website builders and e-portfolio repositories are a few more web 2.0 resources that can boost dry content and add collaboration and participation to the diverse skills needed in the virtual classroom.

Using a variety of media types is a cognitive strategy in itself, offering similar content in different formats and opportunities to build on concepts,  This, in turn should develop greater independence for online students.  I can see being a student in an online or blended classroom getting better, less stressful and even appealing with more experience.  For now, I am learning to learn in a different way and am having growing pains.

One other item of note, regardless of how many videos, podcasts or images are used in a virtual classroom, I do find online teaching and learning to be text-based.  This is an observation, not a criticism and text, be it in books, articles or other formats is a very important media.
